In 1996, International Truck and Engine Corporation (International), a subsidiary of Navistar International, faced a dilemma. Despite its position as a leader in commercial truck manufacturing, the company found itself with an aging medium-duty product line. That line had
been launched over 20 years ago - in 1977 - and only had one significant refresh in 1989. In response to this environment, International conceived and developed the next generation vehicle (NGV) medium duty platform. As result, International was able to introduce a new lineup of high performance trucks in February 2001.
The new 4000 Series, which reached full production in April 2001, was the first in a series of models based on this platform to be introduced over a two-year span. Other models include the International 7000 Series and the International 8000 Series.
