Two Swedish car companies - Scania, established in 1901, and Vabis, founded in 1891 – each produced their first truck in 1902. In 1911, Scania and Vabis merged, enabling them to combine each company’s best technical solutions. Eight years later, Scania-Vabis decided to
focus on trucks. The success of the company was due in large measure to its research and development in truck engine design. Scania introduced the Hesselman engine in 1926, which could run on fuel oil as well as gasoline,
and in 1991 introduced the world's first turbocompound truck engine. Scania introduced another upgrade of their V8 engine in the year 2000.
