Leland James, who was President of Consolidated Freightways in the late 1930's, wanted a lighter transport truck with some aluminum components but truck manufacturers nixed the idea
as not being practical. James dedcided to manufacture the truck himself and, by 1942, was manufacturing under the name Freightliner Corporation, a company that would become North America's
leading heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer.
